La Prairie is a luxury skincare brand, with notoriously expensive skincare products. The are known to use high quality, unique ingredients, including caviar extract. Is caviar extract scientifically proven to effectively improve skin appearance and fight the signs of aging, or is it merely a pure luxury experience?

La Prairie is the first skincare company to introduce Skin Caviar, the first encapsulated delivery system to contain active ingredients, including caviar extract. Unfortunately, there is extremely limited research on this ingredient. A recent study shows that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) component in the caviar extract appears to inhibit UVB-induced premature aging by suppressing matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1, an enzyme that degrades various extracellular matrix proteins in the skin) in fibroblast cells. However, I found no clinical evidence for the efficacy of caviar extract although this ingredient has been used in skincare since 1987.

However, it is important to note that the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Based on the scientific evidence available to date, I personally think that this particular range is not worth the hefty price tag. So if you're looking for an effective anti-aging ingredient, there are effective ingredients out there that have been scientifically proven to reduce signs of aging, incuding retinol. With that said, I also think that personal experience matters in this case. If you have been using this range for some time and you really notice a difference in your skin appearance, then definitely keep using it!

Much love,
